Art is a nine-week connections program that involves the process of creating, connecting, presenting and responding to art based upon the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Visual Arts.  Our curriculum is centered around student choice, allowing room for students to explore, experiment, and engage in personalized learning and discover new strengths along the way.  Students learn creative problem-solving skills and apply knowledge from other subjects and personal interests to connect their art-making practice to their community. Students will understand that art is not an innate talent but a learned skill, and that with knowledge, practice, and persistence, every student can be successful in the art room.

For 8th graders particularly passionate about art, SFMS offers a yearlong, advanced art class. Space in the class is limited, and in order for students to be considered for the class, they must apply in the spring of their 7th grade year. Application deadlines are adjusted year to year to fit the school calendar, so be on the lookout for our announcements and social media to learn how to apply in the spring.

For students interested in a more independent art-making opportunity, SFMS hosts an art club that meets after school on Thursdays, and periodically during flex time. Each grade level meets separately. Sign ups are through SchoolPay, and will close on 8/23/24. If you have any questions about joining the club, please reach out to Mrs. Hughes at f39508@forsyth.k12.ga.us

Mrs. Hughes has been teaching art for 8 years, and has been the art teacher at SFMS since 2020. She holds a Bachelor's of Fine Arts/ Arts Education from the University of Georgia, and is working towards completing a Master's of Arts and Design from Kennesaw State University. While her favorite artistic mediums lean towards painting, photography, and ceramics, she would consider herself to be a mixed media artist, and enjoys introducing students to a wide variety of art media and practices to further their creative exploration.
